China angry at Russia over leaked discussion on arms transfers
23:30, 03.03.2023

Russia has repeatedly asked China for military assistance after the invasion began.

For decades, russia was an active arms supplier to china. on average, from 2001 to 2010, russia sent $2 billion worth of weapons to china annually. now, because of the war in Ukraine, russia is woefully short of armored vehicles and ammunition.

The Economist reports this, citing its own sources.

So far China has only sent non-lethal aid: helmets or dual-use goods. Now China may finally abandon the idea of transferring arms, as any support would have to remain secret.

The publication writes:

The war could be an opportunity for China to reset and balance its defence relations with Russia, since before the invasion China mainly imported Russian weapons. Now the PRC has a chance to become an equal partner in the Russian defence industry. China does not want Russia to lose out on the battlefield, particularly thanks to US missiles and European tanks. Also the PRC wants US energy resources to be mainly exported to Europe rather than to the Indo-Pacific region.
