Queen Margrethe II of Denmark, who ruled the country for 52 years, has abdicated the throne


Queen Margrethe is a popular figure in Denmark, and many Danes expected her to remain on the throne for the rest of her life.
Denmark's 83-year-old Queen Margrethe II, who ruled the country for 52 years, has abdicated and handed over the crown to her eldest son Frederick. It is the first time in 900 years that a Danish monarch has voluntarily relinquished the title.
Margrethe II was the longest reigning monarch in the country's history. Many expected that, like her predecessors, the queen would rule until her death.
The Danish queen said the reason for the decision was the back surgery she underwent in February 2023.
Many people have gathered in front of Christiansborg Palace in Copenhagen (second photo): here at 15:00 local time, the royal family will appear on the balcony and the Prime Minister will proclaim Frederik as king.
