On the anniversary of the Chernobyl accident in Slavutich, a night of remembrance was organised

On the night from 25 to 26 April, on the anniversary of the Chernobyl accident, members of the ChNPP Youth Organisation traditionally carried the Guard of Honour at the memorial sign to the Heroes of Chernobyl in Slavutich. This is reported on the Facebook page of the ChNPP Youth Organisation.

With a guard of honour they paid tribute to the participants of the liquidation of the consequences of the Chernobyl accident.

We let all the pain of Chernobyl through our souls and bow low to all those who gave their lives and health for our bright future 38 years ago, - the message says.

Residents and guests of Slavutych this night come to the central square of the city with flowers, lamps and candles to honour those who saved the world from nuclear disaster.

During the minute of silence Slavutich seems to return to the past, to that terrible April night. Tears come to the eyes of those who came to honour the scale of the Chernobyl disaster and the heroism of its liquidators.

The accident at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant took place on 26 April 1986. The reactor of the fourth power unit of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant, located near the city of Pripyat, was destroyed. The reactor core was completely destroyed and a large amount of radioactive substances were released into the environment.

The largest depositions were observed in the territories of Belarus and Ukraine. The population, more than 115 thousand people, was evacuated from the 30-kilometre exclusion zone around the NPP. More than 500 thousand people participated in the elimination of the consequences of the accident.

Earlier Socialportal reported that in 2022 the risk of a repeat of the disaster seemed more real than ever. Slavutych, where families of Chernobyl workers live, Russian troops tried to storm the town for three days in 2022, after which it was occupied on 26 March.

After the defeat near Kiev, the Russian occupiers left the Exclusion Zone and the town of Slavutych. But the Zaporizhzhya nuclear power plant remains under occupation for the time being.
