The military reported that the gas was similar to chlorine and caused breathing difficulties.

A serviceman, who is an air defence system operator, said in an interview with Radio Liberty that the enemy was using gas of unknown origin against defenders of Ukraine.

The soldier described the situation, with the occupiers throwing smoke bombs at multi-storey buildings. For example, three days ago they used gas similar to chlorine. This led to people in the basement finding it difficult to breathe, they were short of air.

Chlorine is one of the most common gases used as a chemical weapon. It can cause serious breathing problems and, if not treated promptly, can be fatal.

If confirmed, the use of such weapons could be considered a violation of international law as well as the Convention on the Prohibition of the Development, Production, Stockpiling and Use of Chemical Weapons and on Their Destruction.

Another serviceman, deputy commander of the second rifle battalion of the 93rd OMBr, call sign "Philosopher", said:

The situation in Bakhmut is tense, numerous of the most combat-ready units have been drawn around the town. We have them pinned down here and they cannot move to another direction.
