Poland’s Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski has stated that Russia may attempt to stage a provocation against one of the NATO countries in order to justify further escalation. He emphasised that the Alliance is ready to defend every centimetre of its territory and will respond to any aggression.

Poland’s Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski has stated that he does not rule out the possibility of provocations by Russia against NATO countries and has warned Moscow of a strong response in the event of an attack on the Alliance. He made these remarks in an interview with CBS News.

According to the Polish Foreign Minister, Russia may attempt to stage a false-flag operation on its own territory in order to create a pretext for striking one of the NATO countries.

“We must make it clear to Putin that we know what he is planning, that he will not succeed in deceiving us, and that we will defend every inch of NATO territory,” Sikorski emphasised.

The minister noted that Poland is not considering the possibility of attacking Russia, but believes it is necessary to be prepared for any scenario.

Responding to a question about the most vulnerable areas, Sikorski mentioned the Suwałki Corridor, which is often cited as a potential flashpoint on NATO’s eastern flank.

He also pointed out that Poland currently allocates 4.8 per cent of its GDP to defence – more than the US in relative terms – and is actively modernising its armed forces by procuring F-35 and F-16 fighter jets, Abrams tanks and HIMARS rocket systems.

“If Ukraine is not enough for Putin and he wants war, we will do what we have always done,” the minister said.

Sikorski emphasised that Russia currently lacks sufficient forces to launch a successful attack on NATO, as long as Ukraine continues to resist Russian aggression.

At the same time, he noted that should Russian troops be massed near the borders of NATO member states, the Alliance would respond in kind. According to the minister, prior to the full-scale invasion of Ukraine, intelligence had been monitoring a build-up of Russian forces for several months, so such preparations would not go unnoticed.
