The number of legionellosis victims is rising in Poland
Legionnaires' disease manifests as severe pneumonia caused by microorganisms belonging to the genus Legionella, usually the bacterium Legionella pneumophila. The bacterium resides predominantly in standing water systems at temperatures of 25 to 45 degrees centigrade.
In the Podkarpackie voivodeship of Poland, the number of people who died as a result of infection with legionellosis has risen to 19. This writes Polsat News with reference to data from the sanitary and epidemiological service.
It is noted that two new infected were hospitalised last Thursday. They, as well as the 17 who died before them, had associated diseases.
A total of 160 cases of infection have already been confirmed in the region. The largest number of patients was recorded in Rzeszów - 107.
Legionellosis or "Legionnaires' disease" is an acute infectious disease caused by bacteria of the genus Legionella, manifested by fever, intoxication, damage to the respiratory system, more often with the development of severe pneumonia.
Legionellosis is contracted by inhalation of water aerosol, vapour, or any other form of water suspension in which the pathogen is present. The bacterium is found in lakes, rivers, streams, hot springs and other bodies of water.
The disease is detected by urine testing for Legionella pneumophila antigen.
