UN says how many people die every day because of the war in Ukraine

From 1 February to 31 July this year, at least 1,028 civilians were killed and 3,593 people were injured as a result of military operations in Ukraine. According to the organisation, over the past six months, about six people have been killed and about 20 others have been injured for war-related reasons. This was reported by the head of the UN Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine, Danielle Belle, at a briefing in Kiev on 4 October, Interfax-Ukraine reported.

The organisation stressed that they were talking only about the country's civilian population and noted that it was particularly painful that children were suffering.

Most of the victims, 86 per cent, were in government-controlled territory, and therefore likely to have been the result of attacks carried out by Russian Federation," Belle pointed out.

In terms of what caused the most deaths, she noted that large-area explosive weapons were responsible for more than 90 per cent of the casualties.

At the same time, a significant number of civilian casualties were recorded as a result of the use of multiple rocket launchers. Cluster munitions have also caused civilian casualties in the territory controlled by the Ukrainian government," the UN representative said.

Belle also noted that at least 25 Russian attacks have damaged or destroyed infrastructure related to grain exports since the beginning of July.

The UN emphasised that Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine violates the UN Charter and international law.
