Dmitry Karyagin beat his 87-year-old grandmother (a World War II veteran) with a hammer for money and left her to die in the basement.

Yevgeny Prigozhin, founder of the Wagner PMC, Russia, visited prisoners who had been wounded in Ukraine and promised their freedom. A video of the meeting was shown by RIA FAN, a businessman-affiliated publication.

In their turn, investigators of the Agency.Novosti resource identified a certain Dmytro Karyagin among the criminals who are now promised freedom. He killed his grandmother, a veteran of the Great Patriotic War, with a hammer.

It is known that Karyagin's case resonated in the Russian press because of its unprecedented cruelty. It was written that he persuaded his grandmother to sell her flat in Zainsk (Tatarstan) and move to Moscow with him. On 22 January 2014, a sale agreement was concluded, and on the same day the pensioner received money. After that, the grandson tricked her into taking her to her garage, hit her in the head with a hammer and left her there to die, while he appropriated the money. Meanwhile, the young man told relatives that the old woman had moved abroad.

Six months later, postmen rather than relatives suspected something was amiss. They were worried that the victim had not received her pension for a long time.

At one of the interrogations, Karyagin confessed to the murder and showed the place where he left his grandmother to die of wounds, hunger and cold.

In June 2016, the court sentenced Karyagin to 14.5 years in a strict regime colony.

And on 5 January this year, Karyagin published a post on his VKontakte page for the first time in four years (since his arrest): "In Anapa on rehab after being wounded 480 metres to the sea steeply soon home".

As the journalists note, the video also shows Viktor Varnakov from Kirov, who has been sentenced twice for fraud, including to 13 years in prison in 2017. Also identified were Yevhen Rubezhansky from Shakhtersk, Donetsk Region, who has several convictions in Ukraine, including for theft in 2006; Vladimir Ryashentsev, who in 2015 was sentenced to 2.5 years in prison for stealing four bikes (Article 158 Part 2); as well as Alexander Kobchenko, convicted of theft. What they were serving time for when they were recruited by Wagner PMC, the agency was not able to find out

Prigozhin, who met with the wounded prisoners, said that they had a choice: "If you are alive and well, all is well, legs and arms are in place: either they return to us, or go home, but do not escape. The police should treat you with respect. There is a pardon, a paper, a thank you from the head of the republic and a medal "For Valour". All those who have fought, they receive them, no exceptions yet".

Olga Romanova, head of the "Sitting Russia" fund, writes that the amnestied prisoners were recruited by the Wagner Cheka on 4 or 5 July. Their convictions were allegedly dropped by a special decree of Putin on 6 July: "But if you look at the court websites, all of them are hanging there with convictions and criminal records. In addition, both we and our lawyers have been receiving official letters from the Federal Penal Service all along - saying that they continue serving their sentences in the Rostov region.

The human rights defender said that all those pardoned have signed new contracts with the PMCs and will have to return to Ukraine in 45 days. Additionally, after their release, they remain under the administrative supervision of the Federal Penitentiary Service.
