It became known how many illiterate people live in the world

More than 770 million adults and 126 million children in the world cannot read or write basic phrases. Two thirds of them are women.

This was announced by UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay at the VII International Conference on Adult Education, writes TASS.

Supporting the right to adult education is an indispensable lever for joint progress towards the UN Sustainable Development Goals and the green transition,” said Azoulay.

According to the organization, African countries are considered the most illiterate regions. The anti-record for this indicator is in Somalia, where only 5% of the population can read and write among adults aged 15 years and older. In second place is Chad (22%), the third line is occupied by Mali (31%).

The top ten countries with the least developed literacy among the population are Afghanistan and the Central African Republic (CAR, 37% each), Burkina Faso (39%) Guinea (40%), Guinea-Bissau (42%), Sierra Leone (43%) and Liberia (48%).

Traditionally, the word literate means a person who can read and write, or only read in any language. People who can only read are also called semi-literate.

In Ukraine, according to wikipedia, 99.8% of the population are literate.
