Situation around Bakhmut today

The situation around the town of Bakhmut in Donetsk Region remains difficult.

For six months now, bloody battles have been raging for the town.

Now Russia is trying to attack from two directions: from the north is Krasna Hora, the route to Slovyansk, and from the south is Chasov Yar, the route to Kostyantynivka.

The Ukrainian edition of Forbes writes that despite the difficult situation, the situation around Bakhmut is not as critical as it was, for example, in Severodonetsk.

First, the Bakhmutka River is much smaller than the Severskyi Donets and will not become a serious obstacle if a retreat is necessary. Second, Severodonetsk was in a "pocket" of the Russian army more than 20 km deep.

The publication also says that if the Ukrainian troops retreat, it will be only for a few kilometres. Because immediately behind the city begin the heights, on which the next line of defense has already been built.

It is worth noting that the US has long insisted that Ukraine should withdraw its troops from Bakhmut, which, in its opinion, has no strategic importance for Ukraine, and give priority to the offensive in the south.

Ukraine, for its part, has so far continued to impose urban fighting on Russia, as this is the tactic of inflicting the greatest losses on the enemy under more disadvantageous conditions.
