Merz assured that Germany will continue to support Ukraine in the future

The new head of the German government, Friedrich Merz, said during a visit to Kiev on 10 May that the Federal Republic would continue to provide comprehensive assistance to Ukraine. At a meeting in the United Europe in Ukraine format, as part of the "coalition of the willing" initiative, he stressed that strengthening the Ukrainian Defence Forces remained the most important task for European partners and countries involved in the Ramstein format.

Merz noted that Germany would not limit itself to financial assistance. Berlin intends to actively participate in political efforts to achieve sustainable peace.

Ukraine can count on my support, on the support of Germany, of Europe. We will not back down. Our involvement includes both financial aid and assistance in negotiations for the sake of ceasefire and peace. These goals are inseparable," the Chancellor said.

He also added that the US, France and the UK should remain the key players in the peace settlement. Washington's involvement, including President Donald Trump's, in international efforts to force Russia to negotiate must be maintained, he said.

A genuine ceasefire requires action on all fronts - on land, in the air and at sea. And to achieve this requires not only diplomacy, but also the determination of allies," the German leader said.

The Chancellor emphasised the constructive position of the Ukrainian leadership, contrasting it with the ongoing aggression by the Kremlin. He emphasised that the pressure on Moscow should increase, as Vladimir Putin, according to him, seeks to weaken the partners' support for Ukraine. However, as Merz assured, this will not happen.

Berlin will continue to strengthen Ukrainian defences until a ceasefire and sustainable peace are achieved. This is our duty to Ukraine and Europe," he said.

In addition, Merz warned: if Russia rejects the initiative of a temporary ceasefire for 30 days, the international community will take new steps. We are talking about the introduction of additional sanctions measures, which, according to him, will be tangible for Moscow.
