Internal migration: how the country's population map changed after the outbreak of war

The eastern regions lost the most population.
After the beginning of the war, migration processes started in the territory of our country. Part of the population left Ukraine and went abroad, but the majority of citizens decided not to leave the country, but moved to safer areas. According to the results of a study by the Centre for Economic Strategies, Kiev became the leader in terms of population growth after the Russian invasion.
It is indicated that the number of population in Kiev and the region has increased by 48.1 per cent in two and a half years.
Population growth is observed in Poltava (+2.1%), Dnipropetrovsk (+2%), Kirovograd (by almost 1%) and Cherkasy (+ 0.2%) regions.
In other regions of Ukraine, the number of residents decreased during the full-scale war. The smallest decline (by 5.87%) was recorded in Lviv region. The population of the frontline regions - Kharkiv (-33%), Mykolayiv (-42%), Zaporizhzhya (-63.4%) and Kherson (-84%) - decreased the most.
At the same time, the researchers emphasise that there is no precise information about the regions that are under temporary Russian occupation and it is impossible to find out what part of local residents left.
It should be noted that people continue to be evacuated from a number of regions. Mandatory evacuation has been announced for all settlements that are in close proximity to the front. Children with their families are being taken out of Kharkiv, Donetsk, Poltava, Sumy and Chernihiv regions on a mandatory basis. As a rule, many of the displaced people stay within the region, but many go to Kyiv and to the west of Ukraine.
According to various estimates by international organisations, there are about 7.5 million Ukrainians abroad at the moment.
