A herd of feral cows survived the occupation in the Chernobyl zone

In the Chernobyl zone for several years lives a herd of feral cows, which feel perfectly well at any time of the year. This was reported in the Chernobyl Radiation and Ecological Biosphere Reserve.

For several years in a row, the staff of the reserve has been observing a surprising phenomenon, as in the view of the average citizen: a herd of feral cows, which feel perfectly well in the exclusion zone at any time of the year - reported in the reserve.

In pre-war times the herd numbered up to 20 heads. The animals survived the occupation and continue to explore the expanses of the reserve.

Employees of the reserve reminded the main facts about once domestic animals in the wild.

Cows were kept by "self-settlers" in Chernobyl and the village of Lubyanka. When their owners died in 2016, the herd began to live in the wild, - reported in the reserve.

The feral cows often use abandoned buildings in the exclusion zone for protection from wind and precipitation.

The animals are well-fed and there are no problems with fodder. In winter they dig up dry grass from under the snow with their hooves.

Wild cows do not need to be milked regularly. The lactation cycle is linked to the birth of calves.
