For the first time since the outbreak of full-scale war in Ukraine, Chinese leader Xi Jinping is set to speak to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenski.
This was reported by the WSJ, citing informed sources.
Reportedly, the Chinese leader's meeting with the Ukrainian president may take place next week in an online format. Probably after Xi Jinping visits Moscow for a meeting with Vladimir Putin.
Xi is also known to be considering visits to other European countries as part of his trip to Russia. The full itinerary is currently undetermined.
It is noted that if Xi Jinping and Vladimir Zelenski do meet, it will be a significant step in Beijing's attempts to play the role of peacemaker and mediator between Russia and Ukraine. Beijing's previous steps in this direction were perceived sceptically by the West.
