Russians destroyed a monument to Holodomor victims in occupied Luhansk

Yesterday, 17 July, the Russian occupiers demolished two monuments: to the victims of the Holodomor and to the victims of Stalinist repressions. According to the version of local "media" the reason for the dismantling was that they allegedly "offended the patriotic feelings of Luhansk residents".

The occupation authorities of the city also stated that the decision to dismantle "was made by deputies of the city council after appeals of veterans' organisations" and that "both monuments appeared 'in the Ukrainian period'", meaning the times of independence of Ukraine, - told in the Museum.

It is noted that in Lugansk the monument to the victims of the Holodomor of 1932-1933 years was established in 2008 in memory of thousands of residents of Lugansk region, who died during the Holodomor. The monument bears the names of many residents of the region, although many victims remain nameless.

The monument to the victims of Stalinist repressions was erected back in the times of the Ukrainian SSR - in September 1990. It was an initiative of the local community.

Earlier, the occupiers dismantled similar memorials, particularly in Donetsk, Mariupol and Kherson region.

The museum noted that the denial of the Holodomor is part of the historical policy of modern Russia. Therefore, the outraged museum workers called on law enforcers to conduct an investigation, as well as to "react to the public denial of the Holodomor by the so-called 'officials' of the occupation 'authorities'".
