We will not stop until we drive out the age-old enemy - Zaluzhny

on 29 January, Ukraine celebrates the memory of the Heroes of Krut, Ukrainian students who stopped the Bolshevik attack on Kiev in 1918 at the cost of their own lives.
The Ukrainian military today continue with dignity the cause of the Heroes of Kruty and defend the independence of the state in the fight against the Russian invasion. So we will not stop until we drive the age-old enemy out of our land, says a statement by Valeriy Zaluzhny, Commander-in-Chief of the Ukrainian Armed Forces.
Memory makes us stronger. Ukrainian warriors at Kruty gave their lives, but defended independence and won international recognition for their young state. Today we continue their cause with dignity. As in the winter of 1918, so in 2022 the best of the best became in defense of Kiev and the whole Ukraine from the Russian invasion, - wrote Zaluzhny.
He stressed that the price of fighting is high, but the price of defeat, and we know this from the lessons of history, is much higher.
Therefore we will not stop until we have driven the age-old enemy out of our land. We must be strong enough to win and secure the state from new attempts at an armed takeover," Zaluzhny said.
Synopsis
on January 29 Ukraine celebrates the Day of Remembrance of Heroes of Krutsk. On this day Ukrainians pay tribute to the fortitude and courage of the young people who stood up to defend the Ukrainian state and stopped the Bolsheviks at the outskirts of Kiev.
At the end of December 1917, the government of Soviet Russia began an open aggression against the Ukrainian People's Republic. The Bolsheviks created a separate "Ukrainian Red Government" in Kharkov, which declared war on the independent part of the state.
On the morning of January 29, 1918 the Bolsheviks began an attack on the station Kruty. According to various sources they were from 4 to 6-7 thousand, on the Ukrainian side 300-600 fighters took part in the battle near Kruty.
Our troops retreated in an orderly manner, destroying all the roads and bridges, while Simon Petliura had time to put down the Bolshevik uprising, which at the same time began at the Arsenal plant.
Then, while retreating, part of the student hundred was surrounded. The platoon lost its bearings at dusk and came to the Kruty station, which had already been occupied by the Red Army. About 30 young men were taken prisoner, tortured and then executed.
