The song contest was supposed to take place in Ukraine, but because of the war, a new place was found for Eurovision.
Ukraine will not be able to host Eurovision 2023 due to the inability to ensure the safety of participants and spectators. This decision was taken by the European Broadcasting Union and offered to hold it in the country whose participant took second place - Great Britain.
At the same time, the organizers noted that the rules of the competition provide for the postponement of the event in case of force majeure situations, including the ongoing war. With the participation of the Ukrainian side, the union has identified a number of risks that may affect the preparation of the event. Among them is the serious risk of air attacks, which can lead to significant casualties.
The song contest website has already announced which cities can host the contest. There are several of them at the moment and the organizers check their compliance with the requirements for organizing the competition.
Some requirements must be met. For example, it should be possible to accommodate at least 10,000 spectators, organize a press center for 1,500 journalists. In the city where the festival will be held, there must be an international airport. There should also be hotel rooms to accommodate at least 2,000 delegates, journalists and spectators, the contest organizers explained.
Many cities meet such requirements, the European Broadcasting Union added. For today in the list of applicants - 9 such British cities: Aberdeen, Belfast, Birmingham, Liverpool, London, Manchester, Newcastle, Nottingham and Sheffield.
At the 2022 competition, held in Turin, Italy won the victory of Ukraine, which was represented by the Kalush Orchestra project with the song Stefania. According to the rules, the country whose representatives won the Eurovision will host the competition next year.
