Acid vapors are irritating to the respiratory tract. With mild poisoning, there are signs of bronchitis, mild bronchiolitis, dizziness, drowsiness; in severe poisoning - pulmonary edema. Gas masks are used to protect against vapors and mist of nitric acid. Prepare wet face masks, residents were urged.

When applied topically to the eye, nitric acid is reported to cause severe damage with extensive necrosis of the cornea and conjunctiva resulting in loss of vision.
