The document must be voted on by the Senate. The final date is not yet known.

The US Senate Foreign Relations Committee has backed a resolution recognizing Russia's actions as genocide against the Ukrainian people. The document is now ready for a vote in the Senate. The official statement said:

Putin has made it incredibly clear through his actions and words that his goal is to destroy the existence of the Ukrainian people. I saw with my own eyes his brutality in Irpin and the Kiev region... We must continue to do all we can to support the Ukrainian people in their fight for survival.

It is not yet known when the document will be voted on in the Senate.

The resolution says:

  • It condemns Russia for genocide against the Ukrainian people.
  • Calls on the US, NATO and European allies to support the government of Ukraine to prevent further acts of genocide against the Ukrainian people by Russia.
  • Supports tribunals and international criminal investigations to bring to justice the Russian political leadership and military guilty of war of aggression, war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide.
  • Calls on the US President to use the Magnitsky Act (enacted to sanction those involved in the prosecution of Hermitage Capital Foundation lawyer Sergei Magnitsky) against those responsible for and complicit in the Russian-led genocide in Ukraine.
  • The document was co-authored by Idaho Republican Senator Jim Risch and Maryland Democratic Senator Ben Cardin.
