How to keep your skin firm: all about collagen for mature skin

As we age, more and more people are interested in ways to keep their skin firm and smooth.
One of the main characters in this story is collagen, a protein that is responsible for the structure of skin, nails, hair and connective tissue. Why it is becoming scarce, how to fight it and what remedies really work - tells Harper's Bazaar India.
Collagen is the main building protein in our body. As Anna Lahey, founder of Vida Glow, explains, it is responsible for the 'fullness' and smoothness associated with youthfulness. Dermatologist Malvina Cunningham compares it to the "skeleton" that gives the skin its firmness and shape.
Over the years, especially after the menopause, collagen production slows down: we lose up to 1.15 per cent of this protein each year. Skin loses elasticity, wrinkles and sagging appear
According to experts, simply applying collagen cream is ineffective: the molecule is too large to penetrate deep into the skin. It is much more important to use products that stimulate the production of your own collagen or prevent its destruction.
The main components of anti-ageing care:
Sunscreen (SPF): UV protection is the main way to preserve collagen.
Retinoids: recognised as the most effective in the fight against age-related changes.
Vitamin C: neutralises free radicals, enhances the effect of SPF.
Niacinamide: gently stimulates collagen production and supports the skin's protective barrier.
You can also choose products that combine active ingredients, such as Shani Darden Retinol Reform or Paula's Pro-Collagen Peptide Moisturiser.
Injectable treatments with polynucleotides are one of the trends of recent years. They stimulate collagen and elastin production, improving skin texture. LED and laser treatments also activate fibroblasts, the cells responsible for collagen synthesis.
Another way to boost collagen levels is through bio supplements in the form of powders, capsules or liquids. According to Anna Lahey, low molecular weight hydrolysed marine collagen is particularly effective for mature skin. Supplements enriched with vitamins, antioxidants and hyaluronic acid further enhance the result: the skin becomes more moisturised, firmer and wrinkles are reduced.
In addition to cosmetics and procedures, collagen depends on lifestyle. It is important to exclude smoking and excess sugar, which destroys the structure of protein. A diet rich in amino acids (broth, fish, eggs) and antioxidants from fruits and vegetables will help both preserve and enhance the production of your own collagen.
