CNN has calculated how much territory Ukraine has lost since the start of the war

Ukraine has managed to wrest parts of Kharkiv and Kherson regions from the Russians.
In the three years since Russia launched a full-scale invasion in 2022, Ukraine has lost 11 per cent of its territories. This conclusion was made by CNN analysts based on data from the Institute for the Study of War.
Since the start of the war, Ukraine has been able to stop Russian forces from advancing towards Kiev, and later made gains in parts of Kharkiv and Kherson regions. However, it suffered significant territorial losses in the eastern part of the country, especially in the areas of Donetsk and Bakhmut," the material says.
Taking into account the territories that have come under the control of Russia and pro-Russian forces since 2014 (Crimea and part of Donbass), the cumulative losses of Ukraine amount to about 18% of the total area of the country, experts calculated CNN.
Also according to the publication, Ukraine was able to retain a significant part of its territories, and in some cases even regain lost land, largely thanks to the military support of Western partners.
According to CNN's infographic, the main donor to Kiev since the beginning of the war in 2022 has been the United States, they accounted for 47% of all the assistance provided. The EU has provided 32 per cent, with another 20 per cent coming from other nations including the UK, Canada and Japan.
In addition, millions of Ukrainians have been displaced from their homes, moving either to other regions of the country or abroad. According to the UN Refugee Agency, there were more than 6.3 million Ukrainian displaced people in Europe by the end of 2024. Specifically, about 1.2 million live in Germany, nearly 1 million in Poland, and there are 390,000 refugees in the Czech Republic. According to the latest UN estimates for June 2024, there are about 1.2 million Ukrainians forced to leave their country in Russia.
