Ukraine will not repeat the mistake of the Budapest memorandum - foreign minister

The Ukrainian foreign minister said that it was important not to repeat the mistake of the Budapest memorandum and to receive concrete security guarantees.
He wrote about this in social network X.
Foreign Minister Andriy Sibiga recalled that on 5 December 1994, the leaders of Ukraine, Russia, the UK and the USA signed a memorandum on the non-proliferation of nuclear weapons. Ukraine received security guarantees from these countries, which were later ignored by the Russian Federation. Sibiga said that Ukrainians would no longer believe empty promises and would rely on their own strength.

According to the minister, Ukraine should learn a lesson from the deplorable experience in the past in order not to repeat the mistake of the Budapest Memorandum. For this purpose, the country needs reliable security guarantees with concrete mechanisms of action "for a real, just and lasting peace".
As we work to put an end to Russia's war against Ukraine, it is important to remember the bitter lessons of Budapest," the minister stated.
