To appease Trump in the short term, Europeans are discussing ways to strengthen security in the Arctic.

European leaders have developed a strategy to confront US President Donald Trump. This is reported by The New York Times.

According to the newspaper, an emergency dinner of European heads of state was held the day after Trump's speech at the World Economic Forum, where he criticised the values of Europe, humiliated politicians and threatened Europeans with economic difficulties. His proposal to buy Greenland drew particular attention from the meeting.

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni called for continued dialogue, while German Chancellor Friedrich Merz advocated urgent measures to reduce business regulation in Europe to boost economic growth and reduce dependence on the United States. French President Emmanuel Macron emphasised: to earn Trump's respect, Europe needs to be able to respond to his threats.

The meeting resulted in a plan of action: keep calm in the face of new provocations, threaten retaliatory duties and at the same time work behind the scenes to reduce economic and military dependence on the US.

Short-term measures include strengthening security in the Arctic, while long-term measures include diversifying trade ties, strengthening the military and reducing dependence on US technology.

However, as the publication notes, Europe does not yet have a strategy for rapid military autonomy, and its financial and banking systems remain fragmented.

Disagreements between the leaders are delaying the decision-making process, and the project of reducing transatlantic dependence may take years, if not decades," experts believe.
