Gas cookers cause the deaths of about 40,000 Europeans every year

Gas cookers have been linked to hundreds of thousands of cases of childhood asthma in the EU and UK.
More than 40 thousand people in Europe, including the UK, die prematurely because of gas cookers. This is evidenced by a study conducted by scientists from the University of Jaume I in Spain, writes Bloomberg.
It is noted that the matter is the impact of nitrogen dioxide formed when using gas for cooking indoors. In high concentrations and prolonged exposure to the substance corrodes the eyes, skin and respiratory tract. Exposure can lead to asphyxiation due to swelling in the throat. Long-term inhalation of nitrogen dioxide may cause bronchitis and emphysema. The substance has no odour.
The study says that about a third of European households use gas cookers. Also, many households heat their rooms with gas.
'From a public health point of view, gas cookers are toxic,' said Juana Maria Delgado-Saborit, lead author of the study.
The scientist noted that the study examined air quality in European homes in different countries. Where there were gas cookers - the air was filled with poisonous particles that negatively affect the human respiratory system.
However, Maria Delgado-Saborit did not call on Europeans to abandon gas cookers en masse and emphasised that they are harmful if used for a long time. At the same time, she emphasised that their use should be approached with caution. In particular, she pointed out that the rooms where food is cooked should be well ventilated, open gas should not be used to heat the house, if possible, it is worth installing a gas leak detector, and if there is such a possibility, it is necessary to stop using gas altogether and switch to electric cookers.
The problem is particularly acute in countries with high levels of gas cooker use, such as the UK, Romania, Poland and Italy," she said.
It is noted that the study should be a signal for decision-making at the level of European governments, as the analysis very clearly illustrates the negative impact of gas cookers on human health.
According to experts, nitrogen dioxide (NO₂) poisoning can manifest itself with various symptoms that depend on the intensity and time of its exposure to the human body. Here are some signs:
Respiratory symptoms:
- Coughing
- Shortness of breath
- Burning sensation in the throat or nose
- Hoarseness
General symptoms:
- Headache
- Dizziness
- Fatigue
- Increased secretion of mucous membranes
If you or someone else experiences these symptoms after possible exposure to nitrogen dioxide, leave the hazardous area immediately, get fresh air, and seek medical attention.
