EU plans to extend temporary protection for Ukrainians until 2027: when to expect a decision

The Council of the European Union intends on 13 June to adopt a political decision on extending the temporary protection regime for Ukrainian citizens until March 2027. This was reported on the agenda of the EU Council's meeting on justice and home affairs.

Ministers are expected to agree on a common position on the extension of temporary protection at the meeting. The final legal formalisation of this decision should take place in the coming weeks. Also, representatives of the EU countries will discuss further steps and possible formats for the transition of Ukrainians from temporary status to other forms of legal stay.

Earlier, the European Commission proposed to extend the legal framework, known as the Temporary Protection Directive, precisely until 4 March 2027. This mechanism was introduced in March 2022 shortly after the outbreak of a full-scale war. It allowed millions of Ukrainians the right to stay, work and access social services in EU countries without having to go through the complicated refugee status procedure.

Most have managed to obtain legal status, basic support, access to medical care, education and the labour market.
