European diplomacy chief Kaja Kallas has spoken out against calls by Belgian Prime Minister Bart de Wever to restore ties with Russia over cheap energy.

This was reported by Reuters.

Earlier, Belgian Prime Minister Bart de Wever said that the EU should negotiate with Russia to end the war in Ukraine because "it is possible to bring Russia to its knees only with 100 per cent support from the USA".

Since we cannot intimidate Putin by supplying weapons to Ukraine, and we cannot bring him to his knees economically without the support of the United States, there is only one way left: to reach an agreement, Wever said.

He said the United States is "not completely" on Ukraine's side and sometimes seems to be "closer to Putin." The Belgian prime minister added that European leaders agreed with him behind closed doors, but "no one dares to say it out loud."

Kaya Kallas said that first they need to agree on what exactly they will talk about with Russia, because if they return "everything as it was" with the Russian Federation, more conflicts and wars will arise.

I was behind these closed doors when we were talking about the leaders' meetings, and I don't see such sentiments, Kallas said.

She emphasised that EU leaders need to "be vigilant" and not give Russia what it wants because "its appetite will only grow".

Earlier, Kallas said that the easing of US sanctions on Russian oil was a "dangerous precedent" because the bloc needs Russia to have less money to wage war.
