After customer complaints, BMW found a starter defect that leads to fire in worst case scenarios

BMW has announced a global recall of hundreds of thousands of vehicles due to a possible fire risk.
The company explains: some of the cars may experience starter failure, which in rare cases can lead to overheating and fire.
According to BMW, the problem is associated with starters manufactured between July 2020 and July 2022. Over time, increased wear can appear in the starter solenoid and short circuits cannot be ruled out. This can cause localised overheating - and in a worst-case scenario lead to the vehicle catching fire while driving.
Sixteen models are covered by the recall. Some countries are already publishing refined lists: for example, Singapore said that the campaign includes different versions of the BMW 2-, 3-, 4-, 5-, 6- and 7-series, as well as the X3/X4/X5/X6 crossovers and the Z4 roadster (the exact list depends on the market).
BMW has promised to write to owners and replace the potentially defective starters. For now, the company recommends not leaving the car unattended with the engine running after starting, especially if a remote start was used.
A representative of the carmaker said that this recall is unlikely to significantly affect the company's profits .
Recall, BMW has previously faced major recalls - for example, in 2024 due to problems with brakes from supplier Continental.
